Darwin Barney’s tiebreaking ninth-inning double, capped off a wild reply and the Chicago Cubs rebounded from an eight-run shortage to strike the Washington Nationals 10-9 on Thursday night.
Tony Campana arrived on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored when Barney doubled to right off Henry Rodriguez (3-2). It was Barney’s third strike of Barney and RBI of the game.
Every Washington starter had at least one strike as the Nationals built an 8-0 ahead in the fourth inning.
To tie it, Chicago scored six runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh.
The Cubs got a 9-8 ahead in the top of the eighth and the Nationals tied it at 9 in the underneath of the eighth.
Fifth Chicago pitcher Sean Marshall, who has 5-2, was the winner. He permitted one run in two strikes.
Carlos Marmol pitched a scoreless ninth for his 18th save in 23 chances. He strike Rick Ankiel with a pitch leading off the inning, and walked Laynce Nix. However Marmol stopped working Roger Bernadina on a fly to right to last the game.
