Danica Patrick Signs Up for NASCAR

Danica PatrickDanica Patrick confirmed on what even she accepted was one of sports’ most badly kept secrets.

She proclaimed she is changing full-time from IndyCar to NASCAR next season, “For breaking news that will shock the world … “

She made the proclamation from Ariz, her sponsor’s offices in Scottsdale. She will compete a full countrywide season for JR Motorsports and a part-time Sprint Cup schedule with Stewart-Haas Racing.

Patrick said, “If it was about money, I’d have gone a long time ago.  I just go where my heart tells me, where my gut tells me to go, where I’m enjoying my life the most, where I feel like I can have the most success. I’ve truly enjoyed my experience in NASCAR, to the point that I want to do it full-time.”

Patrick is a tremendously marketable driver, although she doesn’t win much – much like her Nationwide boss Dale Earnhardt Jr.  She’s got one IndyCar win in 2008 and three top-10 finishes in 20 Nationwide starts.

“I feel like in the last year, I’ve really come around much more on the track and the top-10s are happening much more frequently,” Patrick said.  “I feel like I’m getting it more and more all the time.  I still have a lot to learn, that’s for sure, but I really feel confident that I can be successful in the future.”

  1. I think unless she performs really bad, like finishing out of the Top-30 every week, she will have a long stay in the sport just based on her marketability. For example, UPS has stayed loyal to David Ragan for so long now even though he rarely performs like the top drivers. Similarly, if Danica’s sponsors see that they are getting their money’s worth from sponsoring her regardless of her performance, they will continue to fund her efforts.
