This was a different type of injury bug for Matt Holliday.
A moth got trapped deep in Holliday’s right ear Monday night, forcing the St. Louis Cardinals slugger out of a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Holliday walked off the field holding his ear with two outs in the top of the eighth inning. Cardinals trainer Barry Weinberg attempted to help the All-Star left fielder as he headed toward the bunker.
St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said seconds after his team’s 2-1 loss, “He had a moth fly into his ear, deep into his ear. I don’t even know what happened to it.”
Team spokesman Brian Bartow said Holliday was taken into a dark room and trainers put a light by his ear to try to get the insect out. That did not work so they used a utensil to get the moth, which was still alive, out of Holliday’s ear.
The outfielder was not available for comment after the game but appeared to be OK as Bartow said.
Holliday was replaced in left field by Corey Patterson.
