Paraguay Finally Enters Copa America

paraguay-enters-copa-americaBy beating Venezuela on Wednesday in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in Mendoza, Argentina, Paraguay went forward to the Copa America final.

The only miss emerged when Justo Villar stopped Franklin Lucena’s shot; still, Paraguay won the shootout, 5-3. In the other semifinals, Dario Veron attained the last spot kick to set up Sunday’s last against Uruguay, which beat Peru, 2-0.

Venezuela came just short of getting the final of the South American competition for the first time. Paraguay proceeded to its first Copa America final since 1979 in spite of not having succeeded in any of its five matches so far. It eliminated Brazil in one more penalty shootout in the quarterfinals.

Sanna Nyassi attained a hat trick to guide Colorado to a triumph over the Red Bulls in Commerce City, Colo.

It was only the seventh time a Rapids player had scored three times in a game. Wells Thompson added a goal for Colorado (7-6-9).

Thierry Henry attained his 10th goal of the year for the Red Bulls (6-5-11), who had been blanked in their past two games.

The Red Bulls are 0-2-7 in their last nine road games.

The Rapids had required a scoring lift after Conor Casey earlier in the day had operation to mend a torn Achilles’ tendon. The last Rapid to have a hat trick, Casey, is anticipated to be sidelined for at least eight months.
